Menorca

Menorca, the northernmost Balearic island, is the protected area for Gin de Mahón. Its technical file links the island's gin to British rule between 1712 and 1802.

Location: Menorca, Spain

The island

The Gin de Mahón technical file limits production to the island of Menorca in the Balearic Islands: 701 km², centred on 39°57' N, 4°3' E, about 36.5 km from Mallorca. It says the merchants of Mahón began trading in juniper berries and Mediterranean alcohols and built stills to supply British soldiers and residents during British rule (1712–1802). The Consell Insular de Menorca is the control authority.
