AOC Rhum de la Martinique recognised (1996)
A decree of 5 November 1996 recognised the appellation d'origine contrôlée for Martinique's rhum agricole.
5 November 1996
Initial recognition of the AOC, later re-approved by decree 2014-1542 and by the order of 29 December 2020.
Why it mattered
Producers had defended the origin of Martinique rhum agricole since a syndicate issued certificates of origin in 1895.
The decree and its successors
Both the 2015 and 2020 specifications state that the AOC "Rhum de la Martinique" was initially recognised by the decree of 5 November 1996. The specification was re-approved by decree 2014-1542 of 18 December 2014 and again by an order of 29 December 2020, and is registered as a GI under Regulation (EU) 2019/787.
