Guyana (Demerara)
The former colony of British Guiana, where the Diamond distillery keeps historic wooden stills named after old plantations. Those plantations were worked by enslaved Africans.
Character
Molasses rums from a range of stills, including wooden pot and Coffey stills (trade sources).
Plantations and stills
The stills at Diamond carry the names of colonial plantations. The UCL Legacies of British Slavery database records Port Mourant, on the Corentyne coast of Berbice, as a cotton plantation in 1813, where 131 enslaved people were registered in 1818 and 208 in 1831; in 1823, 90 people were moved there from two other estates. Its owners claimed £12,083 in compensation after abolition.
