GlenAllachie

A Speyside malt distillery near Aberlour, built in 1967 to supply blends and bought from Pernod Ricard in 2017 by a group led by the blender Billy Walker. Since 2026 Companies House has shown two Walker family trusts as its main shareholders.

Location: United Kingdom

Status

Owned by The GlenAllachie Distillers Co Limited; since 23 March 2026 two Walker family discretionary trusts each hold 25-50% (Companies House, checked 2026-10-28). Independent of drinks groups since the 2017 sale by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard).

History

The distillery was built in 1967 by Mackinlay McPherson, the distilling arm of Scottish & Newcastle Breweries, during a boom in demand for Scotch blends. The company says it was the fourth distillery designed by William Delmé-Evans and that its first production run was in 1968. In 1985 it passed to Invergordon Distillers, and in 1989 to Campbell Distillers, later part of Pernod Ricard; ScotchWhisky.com says it was mothballed for most of those four years. Its whisky went almost entirely into blends.

In July 2017 Chivas Brothers agreed to sell the distillery, its single malt brand, the MacNair's and White Heather blends and stock to a consortium of Billy Walker, Graham Stevenson and Trisha Savage. Walker had built up the BenRiach company, sold to Brown-Forman in 2016. The new owners added a capital "A" to the name. Companies House shows the owning company incorporated on 1 March 2017 and, since 23 March 2026, two Walker family trusts as its persons with significant control.

Place

GlenAllachie lies near Aberlour in Moray, in the Speyside region, and takes its water from springs on Ben Rinnes. According to the company, Delmé-Evans laid it out to be fed almost entirely by gravity, to save energy. A visitor centre opened on the first day of the Spirit of Speyside festival in 2019. The company has since received a Scottish Government-backed grant for mechanical vapour recompression, which it says will halve energy demand, powered in part by 134 solar panels in a neighbouring field.

Making

ScotchWhisky.com gives a capacity of 3.9 million litres of alcohol a year. Each mash of 9.4 tonnes goes through a stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun, and the wort is only moderately clear. Fermentation in six washbacks lined with stainless steel now lasts about 100 hours; the new owners lengthened it. Two pairs of stills are heated by steam: lamp-glass wash stills charged with 21,500 litres and ogee-shaped spirit stills charged with 15,000 litres. Peated runs now make up about 20% of production, and the main barley varieties named are Propino, Optic, Oxbridge and Concerto.

Character

ScotchWhisky.com describes the older spirit as light, with a malty undertone and delicate fruit, typical of distilleries of the 1960s, and says the longer fermentations have made it fruitier and heavier. The new owners released six single casks in April 2018 and a first core range that June, which the company describes as the first range of single malts from the distillery. Peated GlenAllachie had not yet reached the shelves when the reference page was written.
