Speyside

A protected Scotch whisky region along the River Spey in Moray and Badenoch and Strathspey, defined in law by council wards. The Scotch Whisky Association calls it the most densely populated whisky region in the world.

Location: Speyside, around Dufftown, United Kingdom

Character

Described by the Scotch Whisky Association as generally light on peat and fruity, commonly matured in sherry casks.

Definition

The Regulations define Speyside as the Moray Council wards of Buckie, Elgin City North, Elgin City South, Fochabers Lhanbryde, Forres, Heldon and Laich, Keith and Cullen, and Speyside Glenlivet, together with the Highland Council ward of Badenoch and Strathspey. It is listed as a region in its own right alongside Highland; the text does not say whether the two overlap. The Scotch Whisky Association describes Speyside whiskies as "frugal with peat and full of fruit", commonly matured in sherry casks.
