Gordon & MacPhail

A family-owned company in Elgin that began as a grocer's shop in 1895 and became, by its own account, a specialist in maturing and bottling old and rare single malts from many distilleries. It owns the Benromach and The Cairn distilleries, and in 2024 it stopped filling new casks at distilleries it does not own.

Location: United Kingdom

Status

Independent bottler and distiller; 'company' is the closest kind in the schema. Trades through Speymalt Whisky Distributors Limited (Companies House: no registrable controller).

History

James Gordon and John Alexander MacPhail opened a grocery business in South Street, Elgin, in 1895, selling local produce and imported goods. From the start, the company says, it sent its own casks to distilleries across Scotland to be filled with new spirit and left them to mature for many years, at the distillery or in its own bonded warehouses in Elgin. It describes itself as having been trusted with new spirit from over 100 Scottish distilleries.

The family fulfilled a long-held ambition in 1998 by opening its own distillery, Benromach, and added Red Door Gin in 2018. A second distillery, The Cairn, opened near Grantown-on-Spey in October 2022. In 2024 the company ended the practice of filling casks at distilleries it does not own, to concentrate on its two distilleries; it says its maturing stocks will keep Gordon & MacPhail bottlings coming for decades.

Place

The company is based at George House, Boroughbriggs Road, in Elgin, Moray, a town in the Speyside region. The original South Street shop is still trading, and the company plans to open a Gordon & MacPhail Whisky Experience on those premises, expected in 2027. Its distilleries are Benromach in Forres and The Cairn near Grantown-on-Spey, overlooking the River Spey towards the Cairngorms. Because it bottled whisky from many distilleries, the origin of each bottling is the distillery named on the label, not Elgin.

How it works

Unlike most independent bottlers, which buy casks of mature whisky, Gordon & MacPhail chose its own wood and had distilleries fill it. Its sherry casks are made in Jerez to its specification and seasoned before shipping; its ex-bourbon casks are sourced with Speyside Cooperage. Casks matured at the distillery or in Elgin until the family judged them ready. This long programme left it with large maturing stocks; the company says it offers some of the world's rarest single malts, many of them one-off bottlings. Since 2024 no new casks are being filled outside its own distilleries.

Character

The company's stated skill is matching cask to spirit. Its bottlings carry the character of the source distillery shaped by its own cask choice, often sherry wood from Jerez or American oak. It says a whisky carries the Gordon & MacPhail name only when "four generations of experience" judge it ready. Its own future single malts will come from Benromach, and from The Cairn, whose first single malt it does not expect to release before the mid-2030s.
