Glengyle (Kilkerran)

A Campbeltown distillery founded in 1872 by William Mitchell, closed in 1925 and rebuilt by the Springbank company, which distilled there again from 2004. Its whisky is sold as Kilkerran because the Glengyle name was already trademarked.

Location: Glengyle Distillery, Campbeltown, Argyll, United Kingdom

Status

Owned by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd, itself owned by J & A Mitchell & Co (Companies House). Runs about three months a year with the Springbank team.

History

William Mitchell had run Springbank with his brother John under their father Archibald. According to the company, a dispute between the brothers led William to leave and found Glengyle in 1872. In 1919 the distillery was sold to West Highland Malt Distilleries Ltd, and production stopped completely in 1925. Local clubs and companies used the buildings during the long closure, which kept them in fair repair.

In 2000 the buildings were bought by Mitchell's Glengyle Ltd, a company incorporated that year and headed by Hedley G. Wright, chairman of J & A Mitchell and great-great-nephew of William Mitchell. After a four-year rebuild the first new spirit was distilled in 2004. The whisky took the name Kilkerran, from the town's old name Ceann Loch Chille Chiarain. After Wright's death in 2023 his shares passed to three local trust funds.

Place

Glengyle stands on Glengyle Road in Campbeltown, a short walk from Springbank, in the protected locality of Campbeltown at the south end of Kintyre. Visitors check in at the Springbank shop, and the two distilleries share one production team. The company credits the revival of Glengyle, which gave the town three working distilleries again, with helping Campbeltown keep its standing as a whisky region; Campbeltown was named a protected locality in the Scotch Whisky Regulations of 2009. The opened sources do not name Glengyle's water source.

Making

The barley is floor-malted at sister distillery Springbank, and every edition is bottled at the company's bottling hall in Campbeltown. Glengyle shares its production team and calendar with Springbank and runs for about three months a year, usually October to December. In a 12-week season most of the time goes to lightly peated, double-distilled new make; three weeks are given to heavily peated spirit and one week each to unpeated and to triple-distilled spirit. The standard bottling strength is 46% ABV, and the 12 year old is matured in 70% bourbon and 30% sherry casks. The number and size of the stills are not given in the sources opened.

Character

The company describes the 12 year old as lightly peated, with citrus notes and "an oiliness typical of a Campbeltown whisky", and lists sweet confectionery and subtle peat smoke among its aromas. By changing the peat level and the number of distillations within its short season, the distillery makes several distinct versions of the Kilkerran spirit, sold as core bottlings and limited editions.
