Glenmorangie
A Highland malt distillery at Tain on the Dornoch Firth, converted from a brewery in 1843 and known for having the tallest stills in Scotland. It is owned by The Glenmorangie Company, controlled by the French luxury group LVMH.
Status
Owned by The Glenmorangie Company Limited, whose registered controllers are LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (50-75%) and Diageo plc (25-50%) (Companies House, checked 2026-10-28).
History
Glenmorangie began as the brewery for the town of Tain; William Matheson converted it into a distillery in 1843. In 1887 it was sold to the Glenmorangie Distillery Co, and after the First World War it passed to the blending firm Macdonald & Muir. From 1959 it was promoted as a single malt and became Scotland's best-selling one. The company bought Ardbeg in 1997, and in 2004 LVMH bought the firm for GBP 300 million. Companies House lists LVMH and Diageo plc as its controllers.
Place
The distillery's red sandstone buildings stand beside the Dornoch Firth on the edge of Tain in Ross-shire, in the Highland region. ScotchWhisky.com says it uses hard water from the Tarlogie Springs and that its stills, the tallest in Scotland, copy a pair bought second-hand from a gin distillery in 1887.
