Whisky · Region · Short entry
Highland
The protected Scotch whisky region covering the part of Scotland north of a legally defined Highland line. The Scotch Whisky Association treats it as also taking in the islands.
Character
Very varied, from light whiskies to salty coastal malts (Scotch Whisky Association).
Definition
"Highland" is the part of Scotland north of the line that divides it from the Lowland region. The Regulations describe this line from the North Channel to the North Sea, passing Greenock, the Campsie Fells, the Wallace Monument, Milnathort and the River Tay. "Islands" is a common informal grouping, not a protected name. The Scotch Whisky Association says the region "also takes in the islands" and has a huge diversity of styles.
