Lagg
The second distillery of Isle of Arran Distillers, at Lagg near the southern tip of the Isle of Arran, which first distilled on 19 March 2019. It makes the company's heavily peated single malt, using malt peated to about 50 ppm.
Status
Owned by Isle of Arran Distillers Limited, privately owned (Companies House, checked 2026-10-28). Takes the name of an earlier legal distillery at Lagg that closed in the nineteenth century.
History
The first Lagg distillery worked on the site of a former flax mill in the village of Lagg. The company says it closed in 1840 because of poor management, difficult transport and competition from larger mainland distilleries; ScotchWhisky.com gives 1837. After peated whisky had been made in small amounts at Lochranza for the Machrie Moor release, the company decided to build a separate peated distillery in the south of the island.
ScotchWhisky.com reports that groundwork began in 2017 with three warehouses for both distilleries and that construction of the distillery itself started in November 2017; the company's timeline puts the main building in 2018. The first spirit was cut on 19 March 2019, and the first cask, a sherry butt for members of the Lagg Cask Society, was filled on 10 April. The distillery opened to the public on 12 June 2019.
Place
Lagg is a small village near the southern tip of Arran, at the opposite end of the island from Lochranza; both lie in the Highland region. Each distillery has its own production team, and the company says they help one another when needed. ScotchWhisky.com lists borehole water and reports that 140 apple trees were planted on the estate for cider and apple brandy.
Making
ScotchWhisky.com lists Concerto barley peated to 50 ppm and malted by Crisp Malt on the mainland. Mashes of 4 tonnes in a semi-lauter mash tun give a cloudy wort, which ferments for 72 hours in four Douglas fir washbacks. One wash still of 10,000 litres and one spirit still of 7,000 litres, both steam-heated, make spirit at about 68.8% ABV, filled into cask at 63.5%. The reference data give a capacity of 750,000 litres of alcohol a year, while the text of the same page says 500,000 litres. Maturation is in racked and palletised warehouses.
Character
Lagg is a heavily peated style; the company describes it as a distinct kind of peated single malt from the south of the island, and ScotchWhisky.com says the plan was to explore peat from different parts of Scotland, different yeast strains and barley varieties. The opened sources do not give the date of the first Lagg release or a tasting description.
