Strathearn
A very small distillery in former farm buildings at Methven in Perthshire, founded in 2013 and bought by the Glasgow bottler Douglas Laing & Co in 2019. It uses Maris Otter barley and ferments for 144 hours.
Status
Acquired by Douglas Laing & Co in October 2019; since 1 September 2025 Companies House lists a Laing family member, not the company, as the person with significant control.
History
Tony Reeman-Clark founded Strathearn in 2013 at Methven, Perthshire, according to Whisky Advocate. In its early years the distillery made tiny volumes in a highly experimental way, and also made gin and rum. Its first single malt, 100 bottles from one cask, was sold in 2016 through an auction at Whisky Auctioneer.
In October 2019 the independent bottler Douglas Laing & Co bought the distillery outright, its first distillery acquisition; the gin and rum stayed with the earlier owners' business, The Whisky Garden Ltd. Companies House shows The Whisky Garden as owner until 23 October 2019 and Douglas Laing from then until 1 September 2025, after which a Laing family member is the registered controller. Douglas Laing released its first Strathearn single malt in 2024.
Place
The distillery occupies former farm buildings near the village of Methven, close to Crieff, on the edge of Highland Perthshire and in the Highland region; OpenStreetMap places it at Bachilton Farm Steading. The company describes the site as on the outskirts of Perth, near where Scottish kings were crowned on the Stone of Destiny, and says it uses local Highland water. The opened sources do not name the water source.
Making
Under its founder Strathearn worked with an 800-litre wash still and a spirit still charged with 400 litres, and filled small 50-litre casks; batches were double or triple distilled from peated or unpeated malt, according to ScotchWhisky.com. Douglas Laing installed larger stills, a new mash tun and more washbacks. The company says malt is carried in by hand to one of Scotland's smallest mash tuns, fermentation lasts 144 hours, and cut points are set by taste. It uses Maris Otter barley, which it says few if any other distilleries still use. Output is about one barrel a day, and casks include first-fill ex-bourbon, wine, port and sherry.
Character
The company describes the new make from Maris Otter malt as creamy and malty and calls Strathearn one of Scotland's smallest distilleries. The first release under Douglas Laing came from 32 casks of bourbon, sherry and new oak and was bottled at 50%, a strength the company uses for many of its bottlings. Production is small, so Whisky Advocate expects the whisky to stay rare.
