History

John Johnston began legal distilling at Lagavulin in 1816, and a second distillery on the same site was absorbed into it in 1837. The blender James Logan Mackie bought it in 1862; his nephew Peter Mackie, later Sir Peter, created the White Horse blend in 1890 and in 1908 built a second distillery on the site, Malt Mill, which ran until 1962. The floor maltings closed in 1974. Through a long line of mergers it came to United Distillers, now Diageo, which made the 16-year-old one of its Classic Malts in 1989.
