From convent farm to museum

The site was a farm of the White Nuns' Sint-Catharinadal convent. After the French confiscation of church property J.A.S. Bamps turned it into a genever distillery, later run by the Stellingwerff and Theunissen families. The buildings, with malt tower, malt kiln and distillery, were protected by Royal Decree in August 1975 as Belgium's first industrial-archaeological monument, bought by Hasselt city council in 1979, restored from 1983 to 1987, and opened as the Jenevermuseum on 16 September 1987.
