In the Devon port of Plymouth, a merchant's house on Southside Street was converted to gin distilling from 1793, the Black Friars distillery. Plymouth Gin was an EU geographical indication from 2008 to 2016.
A gin port
Historic England's listing records that a large merchant's house of about 1500 on Southside Street was remodelled and extended as a gin distillery from 1793. Difford's Guide reports that by 1850 Coates & Co, the makers of Plymouth gin, supplied more than 1,000 casks of Navy-strength gin a year to the Royal Navy; the atlas has not traced that figure to a primary record. The Plymouth Gin geographical indication was removed from EU law in 2016.
