'Jamaica Rum' was registered as a geographical indication in Jamaica on 1 December 2016; a ruling of 2 October 2024 required ageing in Jamaica.
1 December 2016
Registration of GI/002 'Jamaica Rum' in the name of the Spirits Pool Association; specification rectified on 2 October 2024.
Why it mattered
To protect the reputation of rum made in Jamaica; the 2024 ruling followed a dispute over overseas ageing.
Registration and rectification
The GI was registered on 1 December 2016. National Rums of Jamaica applied in December 2020 to allow ageing overseas under supervision; the Spirits Pool Association applied in April 2021 for its own changes. After hearings in September 2023, the registry ruled on 2 October 2024 that ageing must take place only in Jamaica.
