Schiedam
Schiedam, near Rotterdam, became the genever town of the Netherlands. Its museum keeps a working moutwijn distillery, and since 1902 the town has issued an authenticity seal for genever made there.
Character
Moutwijn distilling, malt-wine genever, distillers' windmills.
The genever town
The genever technical file says distillers moved from Rotterdam to Schiedam in the seventeenth century and that the number of distilleries there "exploded", so that Schiedam became known as the genever capital of the country. It records a Schiedam authenticity seal, signed by the mayor and the town clerk, since 1902. The Nationaal Jenevermuseum says that hundreds of branderijen like its own once worked in the town, supplied by tall grain mills (brandersmolens).
