Gin · Method · Short entry
Compounding
Compounding makes gin by adding juniper and other flavourings to neutral alcohol without redistilling it. EU law allows the result to be called gin but not distilled gin.
Method
Flavouring substances or preparations added to agricultural alcohol, no redistillation.
Definition and limits
Parr, Sutherland and Fisk (2024) define compound gin as gin "produced by adding essences or flavourings to ethanol of appropriate quality without redistillation". Regulation (EU) 2019/787 permits this for gin as long as juniper predominates, but states that gin "produced simply by adding essences or flavourings" is not distilled gin. In 1757 Cooper complained that cheap Geneva was made from malt spirit with oil of turpentine in place of juniper.
